Life goes on…
That's the first thing I learned when my mother passed tragically in March 2016 at the age of 56. The following month I opened this salon in her honor. I wanted her life to go on and I needed a way to support myself and my vision to create a salon that would host numerous art forms. Even my decision to do hair at a vocational school at age 17 was influenced by my mom. And if you have visited our salon, you will see this sign at the door.

Thanks mom

I originally opened the salon under Cook Studio & Gallery in 2016. “Cook” was my married name until 2018. Even though that union ended, I didn't want to change the name to protect what I was building. Since it has been nearly a decade since we opened, I felt it was safe and time for this change. I still have the same vision of the salon since I opened - combining hair, art, books and music - and still chose the hawk to once again symbolize the spirit of Hair Studio & Gallery.

I had a special visitation of a hawk for the first time when I lived in San Diego. I saw this one (see below) perched on the back porch while I was playing music. I have had many other visitations since, and each time it happens I feel a sense of wonder and purpose as if someone is looking out for me. Plus, I feel like what we do at Hair Studio is offer a way to cover people, as our hair is a way to hide and a way to be seen. Like the young hawks can find shelter under the wings of their mother, we can also find shelter with one another. Our happy salon has done this for me and I hope it has for you too.

When you support Hair Studio & Gallery, you are supporting families, mothers, artists, people who are doing good in the world. So I hope you feel good about that because we are so happy you chose us to care for your hair. I dedicated the salon to my mom. But it also dedicated to all mothers, regardless of gender, or whether you even have any children of your own. Mothering is something we do, just like love, and I am thankful that life goes on at Hair Studio & Gallery.
